Abyss of Chaos is the format that lets AION 2 players fight their own faction. NCSOFT introduced it on the Korean service on 23 February 2026 as "a new matching format that allows faction-independent battles such as Elyos vs. Elyos and Asmodians vs. Asmodians, further diversifying Abyss combat experiences". In a game built on two factions living on separate servers, that is a structural answer to a structural problem — it means Abyss content can run even when the sides are unbalanced. It has not been announced for the Western release.
What changed, and when
Abyss of Chaos arrived on 23 February 2026, in the update marking 100 days since launch (official NCSOFT announcement, same date), which presented it under the heading of improving faction balance and lifted all server creation restrictions at the same time. It sits between two other Abyss formats in the record: Spacetime Rift, which NCSOFT confirmed on 25 March 2026 keeps race-based matchmaking, and Chaotic Abyss, introduced the same day, which "divides players into West and East forces at the server level, engaging in large-scale battles regardless of race alignment".
The detail that changes how you play
The practical consequence is about availability rather than tactics. Because this format allows Elyos against Elyos and Asmodians against Asmodians (official NCSOFT announcement, 23 February 2026), Abyss combat no longer depends on both factions turning up in equal numbers — which is the failure mode that empties two-sided PvP in every MMORPG that has one. NCSOFT has published no group sizes, no schedule and no reward structure for this format. What the same announcement did publish alongside it: all server creation restrictions were lifted.
The common misconception
The misconception to clear is that faction choice determines who you can fight. Since 23 February 2026 it does not, at least in this format: NCSOFT explicitly allows Elyos against Elyos and Asmodians against Asmodians. So do not pick your faction on the basis of which side you expect to be outnumbered — the publisher built this format precisely to make that calculation irrelevant. What it costs you is unknown: no entry requirement, no schedule and no rewards have been published. And as on every page here: NCSOFT has not announced what content the Western launch of 30 September 2026 opens with.
