How it works

Spacetime Rift is AION 2’s recurring realm-versus-realm mode, and the one the publisher has kept adjusting since launch. It runs on race-based matchmaking — Elyos against Asmodians — which NCSOFT confirmed explicitly on 25 March 2026 when it introduced a mode that does the opposite: "Spacetime Rift will continue to operate under the current race-based matchmaking system." It is also where the game’s PvP toggle applies. It has not been announced for the Western release in this form.

What changed, and when

Three dated changes shape this mode. On 3 December 2025, NCSOFT shortened its cycle and expanded its capacity, and added a PvP on-off switch: "AION 2 adds a PvP On/Off feature through the new War Mode… The mode can be toggled only within faction territories and includes a 70-minute cooldown." On 23 February 2026 came Abyss of Chaos, a faction-independent matching format sitting beside it. On 25 March 2026, when Chaotic Abyss arrived with server-level West and East forces, NCSOFT confirmed that Spacetime Rift keeps race-based matchmaking. A variant named Spacetime Rift: Domination was announced on 17 June 2026.

The detail that changes how you play

The detail that changes how you play is the toggle and its cost: War Mode "can be toggled only within faction territories and includes a 70-minute cooldown" (official NCSOFT announcement, 3 December 2025). Seventy minutes means the decision is strategic rather than tactical — you cannot flip it when a fight goes badly. The second structural fact is that Spacetime Rift is now one of three Abyss formats: it keeps race-based matching, Abyss of Chaos allows Elyos against Elyos, and Chaotic Abyss splits players into West and East at server level regardless of race. NCSOFT has published no cycle length or capacity figures since the December change.

The common misconception

The misconception this page exists to clear is that AION 2 has one Abyss mode. It has at least three, and they use different matchmaking: Spacetime Rift by race, Abyss of Chaos allowing same-faction battles, and Chaotic Abyss dividing players into West and East forces at server level. A guide that says "the Abyss works like this" without saying which one is describing at most a third of the picture. What this system costs you is a decision with a 70-minute cooldown on the PvP toggle, taken inside faction territory. And as on every page here: NCSOFT has not announced what the Western launch of 30 September 2026 opens with.
